IV Drug Use

Intravenous drug use is the fastest and, sometimes, most intense way of getting high; it may also be the most dangerous and destructive. When a person “shoots up”, he/she injects the drug directly into the bloodstream, affecting the brain and other organs more directly. Because the drug is inserted directly into the bloodstream, the effects are almost immediate, and reversing the effects in the case of overdose is difficult or impossible.
The drugs most often associated with IV drug use are heroin, cocaine and meth, but people inject a lot of different substances. They may or may not realize that they are literally risking their lives every time they shoot up. There are many dangers that come along with IV drug use.
People injecting IV drugs risk getting nasty infections in and under their skin. They often develop big, painful, ugly sores - known as “abscesses.” The most widespread danger associated with IV drug use comes from sharing needles. Many diseases are passed easily from one person to another when needles are shared. AIDS is easily spread through IV drug use; so is hepatitis (a liver disease) and tuberculosis. Even if you cannot see blood on the needle, there may be tiny, invisible droplets containing dangerous viruses.
